This file discusses special resources in the Public Utilities application. You can customize your copy of Public Utilities by adjusting these resources with ResEdit.
This information is for programmers and power users. You can use Public Utilities normally without reading this document. Please do not attempt these modifications if you are not familiar with ResEdit.
The 'ANCR' #2400 resource contains the types and creators for files that should not be moved when a disk is optimized. These are called anchored files . You can add additional file types and creators to this resource. A file type or creator of '****' matches all types or creators.
The 'FRMT' #7800 resource allows you to adjust how text files are saved. Text files are always saved as type 'TEXT', but you can change which application opens them when they are double-clicked by changing their creator. This resource contains the list of creators (and matching application names) that the user is presented with in the standard file save dialog.
The 'TYP#' #4700 resource contains the types of system files which are stored in the repair disk report, and listed in the expert report.
The 'TPer' #6300 resource controls what kind of disk blocks are considered to contain text during the undelete and salvage extended scan. Each block of 512 bytes must have a number of alphabetic characters between Min Alpha Chars and Max Alpha Chars. It must have a number of spaces between Min Spaces and Max Spaces, and the average distance between the spaces must be between Min Average Space Distance and Max Average Space Distance. Finally, the first and last alphabetic character, and the space charater are listed.
The 'NmMM' #13500 resource controls the size of the invisible file 'PubUtils MoveMap' which is created on your root. This file is created or added to each time you optimize a disk. It contains the information which allows Public Utilities to undelete files even after you have optimized your disk. The larger the number in the 'NmMM' resource, the larger the 'PubUtils MoveMap' file will be allowed to grow, and Public Utilities will be able to reach back through more previous optimizations to undelete files.
